Character Name: Shalandra Corrino
Faction: House Corrino
Sex: Female
Age: 33
Hair color: black
Eye color: brown
Unusual markings/piercings/tattoos: wears a great deal of black gothic makeup, fond of adding colorful streaks and highlights to her hair
Height/Weight/Built: 5'5, slim-average build
Personality:
Strange, flighty, and awkward. Shalandra has difficulty realising when she is saying the wrong thing, and often doesn't appreciate when she is making herself appear foolish or even giving great offence. Paranoid and narcissistic, she is trapped in a world all her own and perceives the real one as if through a distorted mirror. She can be devoted to those who show her kindness, but equally can develop vicious and irrational grudges against people based on the tiny or even imagined slights. At her best she comes across merely as slightly eccentric, but on a bad day those around her are likely to wonder if Shalandra is even on the same planet.
Shalandra harbors a deep and almost incomprehensible resentment towards the Bene Gesserit Sisterhood, believing their constant presence in her early life and the dark events surrounding her testing at the Sisterhood's hands to be the source of much of the unhappiness which has plagued her. Bene Gesserit sisters themselves are the natural targets for this ill-feeling but anyone with a connection to the Sisterhood, no matter how small or inconsequential, risk being themselves branded a spy and agent of misfortune.
Her public persona is one of extreme, some might say irrational, confidence. Unshakable in her insistance that she is right her glare has been known to make even Sardaukar flinch. Her vulnerability is revealed in private though and at times her depression and self-doubt can be almost crippling. In her lucid moments Shalandra is a surprisingly wily schemer for whom even the Bene Gesserit have a small amount of admiration, but her frequent bouts of instability usually cause plots to unravel long before they come to fruition.
History:
The only daughter of Corrin XXV and his wife Chalice, Shalandra was born when Elrood was 14. Always a strange child she got on well with her older brother, but seemed to have great trouble making any friends her own age among the various young girls around the court. Lost in her own little world she would alternate between periods of extreme withdrawal and manic screaming fits brought on by the littlest mishaps. As she grew older comments like "eccentric" and "highly strung" were more and more frequently used to describe the Princess Royal and there were even whisperings about deeper problems, with a number of psychologists and counsellors employed by the Imperial household to no great effect. In her teens Shalandra became even more depressed and moody, taking to wearing black gothic clothes, heavy dark makeup, and dabbling in harsh guttural music far removed from the classical forms normally beloved by the nobility. She still had few friends and liaisons with the young men of the court were even fewer, and most were actually afraid of the girl now nicknamed "the mad princess". She remained close to her brother Elrood but friction with her parents, especially her father the Emperor, was at its height. As she grew older she was seen with increasing rarity at official events and gatherings, due both to her own frequent refusal to attend and to a desire on the rest of the household's part to avoid embarrassment.
When she came of age at 21 Shalandra was tested by the Bene Gesserit as was customary for all young noblewomen. Nobody save for Corrin and the Sisterhood were privy to exactly what happened at that testing session, but amid whisperings of "incurable insanity" and "danger to herself and others" Shalandra was packed off to the sanctuary world of Tupile - ostensibly because it was claimed that the climate there would be good for her, but almost everyone at court rightly suspected more serious reasons. During her years on Tupile the young princess had the attentions of many well-qualified Suk doctors as well as a small army of servants in an attempt to control both her depression and her stress levels. She was not present at her father's funeral, nor at the coronation of her brother. However sessions with a new and radical doctor have awakened within her the desire once more to be a part of the royal household, not least because of the current precarious situation with the royal succession. To this end Shalandra has returned to Kaitain and is once more a curious presence about the Palace corridors.
