Against her will, Niobe has received Bene Gesserit training for 13 years, without ever becoming a fully-fledged Sister, at the request of her mother, a Bene Gesserit adept herself.
Never knowing what part she was to play in the Sisterhood's machinations, Niobe has proved to be a careful, dedicated pupil, gradually developing good political and diplomatic skills. For this reason, only a few weeks prior to his death in 10 122, Duke Mintor proclaimed his only daughter the new Siridar Duchess of House Atreides, despite the protests of his advisers.
A year has passed since the beginning of the Duchess' reign and tragedy marks it already: the man Niobe had come to love fell victim to assassins unknown - but not even this personal sorrow may deter her from her duties as ruler of her people.
